Navigating an eTextbook

There are several ways you can progress through an eTextbook:

  • You can use the buttons < and > to change pages going forward and backwards.
  • You can use the slider at the base of the text to move backwards and forwards through the eTextbook at a greater speed.
  • You can jump to a specific page by entering the relevant number at the top of the eReader.

Search

You can search inside the eTextbook you are reading:

  • Selecting the search button will display the search box.
  • You can enter your search term andselect the area you wish to search in, for example Product (the main text) or Annotations. Note: Not all eTextbooks contain all of these sections.
  • Select the search icon to conduct the search.
  • The results will be displayed beneath the search box and your search term will be highlighted in the results.
  • You can select the X to close the search box.

Table of contents

The table of contents can be displayed by clicking on the table of contents icon:

  • You can Expand or Collapse the table of contents by selecting the Expand All / Collapse All options at the top right-hand corner of the table of contents.
  • You can scroll up and down to view the table of contents.
  • You can Collapse or Expand individual parts of the eTextbook when a chevron is displayed.
  • To collapse, the chevron will be pointing upwards.
  • To expand, the chevron will be pointing downwards.
  • Selecting any item in the list will navigate the reading area to the start of that eTextbook.
  • You can select the X to close the table of contents box.

Annotations

You can annotate eTextbooks in a number of different ways. First, highlight the text you wish to annotate by dragging your mouse or finger over the portion of text. You can choose the option you wish to use. You do not need to have the annotation panel open to use annotations:

  • Note – A box will appear where you can enter plain text notes.
  • Highlight – the text will be highlighted on the page, several colours are available.
  • Weblink – add a link that takes you to a website if you click on it.
  • Hyperlink – link elsewhere in the eTextbook you are currently reading.
  • Voice – not available.

By selecting the Annotations button, you can view a list of your annotations. You can filter your annotations using the drop-down menus:

  • Chapter/Topics - will filter by areas of the eTextbook you are reading.
  • Type - will filter by the type of annotation you want to locate.

Your annotations have several buttons that can be used as well:

  • You can select the 'jump to annotation' button to move to that location in the eTextbook.
  • You can select the 'pen' icon to edit your annotation.
  • You can select the 'trashcan/bin' icon to delete your annotation.
  • You can select the X to close the annotation box.

Exporting annotations

Annotations can be exported from the Annotations sidebar. Click on the Annotations sidebar and then select the document export icon at the top of the Annotations list. This will generate a PDF organised by chapter of your annotations.

Editing annotations to groups

The Group annotation button in the Annotation tab allows you to add/remove annotations to any existing groups.

Copy and paste text

You can highlight text to copy and paste as plain text into another program. After highlighting your text, you will see the Annotations toolbar, select the Copy button to open the copy panel. You can copy 20% of a title and the Copy panel will show you how much you have left. You can then confirm your copy and proceed to paste it in the program of your choice. Please note that copy and paste is only available via the web browser Cambridge Spiral eReader. Copy and paste is not available in Mobile or Desktop applications.

Bookmarking

You can bookmark anywhere in an eTextbook by selecting the bookmark icon in the top right-hand corner. You will then be asked to select where you wish to bookmark.

Once completed, your bookmark will appear in your bookmark list. You can open the bookmark list by selecting the bookmark icon on the left-hand side of the screen. The bookmark box has several features:

  • You can expand/collapse bookmarks by selecting the Expand All and Collapse All buttons at the top of the bookmark box.
  • You can collapse or expand individual bookmarks when a chevron is displayed by selecting it.
  • To collapse, the chevron will be pointing upwards.
  • To expand, the chevron will be pointing downwards.
  • To rename a bookmark, select the 'pen' (edit) button.
  • You can select the 'trashcan/bin' (delete) button to remove a bookmark.
  • You can select the X to close the bookmark box.

Groups

Groups can be used to organise annotations instructors have made and wish to share with other instructors or students. These groups can be shared via a code. Annotations can be added or removed to groups when they are created or in bulk via the Annotations tab.

Resources

In some eTextbook tables, figures and other items may be enriched and marked as Resources. In these cases underneath the Bookmark sidebar icon you will see a Resources icon and this can be used to navigate these enriched items.

Settings

You can access settings by clicking the settings cog in the top right-hand corner. This will open the settings panel:

  • You can decrease or increase the text size by using the slider.
  • You can toggle whether to show annotations or not using the 'Show Annotations' radio button.
  • You can save or cancel your changes using the 'Cancel' and 'Save' buttons respectively.

Fullscreen

Pressing the fullscreen button will remove the UI elements. You can click the 'Exit Fullscreen' button to return to the full UI and access other features.

Printing

Pressing the Print icon will enable you to print the current page you are on. The print functionality is limited to 20% of the book during the subscription period your institution has for the title. You can print 1 page at a time. Note Printing is only available via the web browser eReader, printing is not available in Mobile or Desktop applications.
